Well before my time but some cracking stories and memories of him on this thread.
Shame more is not done to celebrate the passing of former players.

One of my heroes. Along with a mate, I rode up to Maine Road, on my Lambretta, in November 1961. No segregation back then and the City fans started pelting us with fireworks. Leslie told the ref, who got the Police to pull us out of the crowd. We were given seats by the side of the directors box and Reg Pratt came and had a chat. We won 5-3 and were invited to meet the players, after the game. He (Reg Pratt) sent us complimentary tickets for the rest of the season. ⚒⚒ Lovely man.

Eastend Hammer - this very sad news - BUT like you remember as a 10 year old very vividly him breaking his finger in that Arsenal game - going off / returning and the crosses and goal that came from the right wing on that 3-3 draw. Another Hammers great departs - RIP Lawrie Lesley.

Re: Lawrie Leslie - RIP

Lawrie Leslie was not my first hero at West Ham but he was the bravest goalie I ever witnessed. I believe he played with a built up boot as result of a leg fracture. Just one of the many injuries he sustained.
In 1962 he suffered a broken finger playing against Arsenal and finished the match on the right wing. No subs then. His cross in the goalmouth at the South Bank end somehow ended in the goal to level the scores at 3-3. Overjoyed I was up and onto the pitch from under the West Stand to hug my hero. My actions although not punished on the day did get me a retrospective bollocking from my old man some two days later, when my exploits were relayed to him on the Monday by two workmates who seen me run on the pitch. A gentle clip round the ear and lecture on self control was the punishment.
Thanks for the memories Lawrie Leslie RIP

My old man used to go and sit on Lawrie’s doorstep in Ilford on a regular basis and Lawrie would read and sign my old mans school publication “Soccer Monthly”. He reckoned Lawrie was a top bloke and a great keeper who should have played more for the Irons. I’ve still got all the stuff with Lawrie’s sIgnatures and comments as my old man is long gone.

A few on here have him as their first football hero, and he was mine, too. I was a goalkeeper when I first started playing football, and as a 9 year old was really upset when he left to join Stoke. I wrote him a letter, and he sent me one in return, handwritten, which I still have. RIP Lawrie.

Sadly your fears were confirmed terry.
R.I.P. Lawrie COYI.
terry-h 1:00 Thu Jun 6 Re: Lawrie Leslie - RIP RIP Lawrie Leslie. I can't see any tribute on our official website unlike Lawrie's other clubs he played for. This might be because our owners are more interested in selling shirts etc than thanking a player for services in the past, or am I being too cynical?

Re: Lawrie Leslie - RIP

That's really sad news. Lawrie was genuinely my first footballing hero. I first saw him in '62 and he made an instant impression on me. As has been said, he must have been one of the bravest of 'keepers. All I remember of Lawrie is of him diving at oncoming centre forwards feet, completely disregarding his own safety. I thought he was absolutely brilliant and was a little surprised when Jim Standen replaced him. I started playing football as a 'keeper and modelled my game on his. RIP Lawrie.

charleyfarley I just spotted that tweet which was sent out hours after Lawrie's other clubs had paid their tributes on official websites. In fact the first mention of Lawrie passing was on Millwall on line at 7:30am on 5 June. Gold's two tweets seemed like an afterthought to be honest.

tery-h from the whufc twitter account @WestHamUtd Following Following @WestHamUtd More Everyone at West Ham is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Lawrie Leslie, who became the first goalkeeper to win the Hammer of the Year award in 1962.

Percy - I seem to remember that Steve Death played on the wing for Reading on The Big Match, after injuring his arm.
He started with us, amassing ONE appearance before going to Reading.
Anyway, sad about Leslie

Probably not one of our best keepers but certainly the bravest goalkeeper I've ever seen. Who would come back on after breaking his arm and play on the wing. R.I.P.
